Health & Fitness Report Card The Institute for Community health is happy to announce that Dr. Virginia Chomitz's article "Promoting healthy Weight Among Elementary School Children via a Health Report Card Approach" came out on August 11, 2003 in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. The article focused on a study with the Cambridge Public Schools designed to evaluate a school-based health report card on the family awareness of child weight and fitness status. This quasi-experimental design included over 1300 students at four Cambridge elementary schools. Families received either generalized information about childhood obesity, individualized information about their child, or nothing. Those with overweight children who received the individualized materials were almost twice as likely to know or acknowledge that their child was overweight. They were also more likely to plan interventions such as physical activities or dieting. Ninety one percent of the parents with overweight children requested annual weight and health information on their child. In summary, Among overweight children, the individualized report card approach was associated with increased parental awareness and intent to make lifestyle changes. Dr. Chomitz commented that it was wonderful that a study which was the result of such a wonderful collaboration was helping to increase parental awareness of childhood obesity. She hoped that other school departments would engage in similar efforts. Recognizing that awareness is the first step in behavioral change Dr. Hacker said, "In order to stem the tide of this obesity epidemic, there is no single answer. It's going to have to take place in schools, families and pediatricians' offices...if we're really going to address it." During this last school year, the Cambridge Public Schools successfully sent out health and fitness reports to over 5000 children and their families. The Institute values the community input and assistance in bringing this project to fruition and sees this type of study as an excellent example of community based participatory research leading to action.
